Reaching New Heights Underground

Maximum curvature of a bore:

Directional drilling is a versatile drilling technology. But there are also maximum curvature restrictions — based largely on the size of pipe — and the bore span. In general, the larger the pipe, the less it will curve in a given number of feet. The table below shows general guidelines for what you can expect.

Maximum pipe bend equals pipe diameter x 100 feet

.5 degrees per 31' 30" 3000 ft. radius
.63 degrees per 31' 17" 2800 ft. radius
.74 degrees per 31' 24" 2400 ft. radius
.89 degrees per 31' 00" 2000 ft. radius
1.1 degrees per 31' 16" 1600 ft. radius
1.47 degrees per 31' 12" 1200 ft. radius
1.77 degrees per 31' 10" 1000 ft. radius
2.21 degrees per 31' 8" 800 ft. radius
2.95 degrees per 31' 6" 600 ft. radius
